Efficiency in Shipping

Every ship is different, and predicting how one will behave, its motions, fuel burn and emissions, under real-world sea states is notoriously complex. AlbatrosDigital was founded in Rotterdam in 2024 by engineers from TU Delft with one goal: make sense of that complexity so the shipping industry, and every ship in it, can become more efficient.

We originate in wind propulsion analysis, involving complex interactions between ship design and environment. That background shapes how we work today: we digest and merge many different kinds of data, noon reports, sensor data, weather data, anything related to how a ship is propelled, into one coherent picture of performance.

We work across the full picture, from optimizing new designs to fine-tuning day-to-day operations, and we build that insight to be accessible to all ship owners, also those with small fleets or specialised ships. Our aim is to be a trusted partner: independent, vendor-neutral, and focused only on giving you an honest read on how your ships actually perform. That neutrality matters most when parties disagree, owner and charterer, operator and technology supplier, we build the one picture of the data that everyone can agree on.

Grounded in naval architecture principles and backed by data and a PhD research in ship hydrodynamics, our physics-informed approach means we can build an accurate vessel performance model from any data you have, from a full sensor fit to almost nothing at all.

To date, we have analysed high-frequency data from over 15 ships, delivering insight into performance improvements such as wind-assisted propulsion, and have delivered over 50 ship models for voyage optimization. We've also completed multiple consultancy projects verifying performance claims for owners, charterers and technology suppliers.

Our team of naval architects, data scientists and software engineers turns that research into high-fidelity ship simulations that anyone can use through a straightforward software license.
